What stands between them is the social stigma that surrounds Violetta, who works as a prostitute.

Verdi’s opera has inspired numerous works of contemporary fiction, including notable 9os romantic comedy Pretty Woman starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, and Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 musical Moulin Rouge.
