Vancouver New Years Eve Fireworks, Where Are They?

Dec 19 2017, 12:46 pm

Vancouver as a city grew up quite a bit this year. After all, we threw the largest sweet 16 party in the world (other than the world cup perhaps) this year. However, once the Olympic spotlight left, so did the mentality for fun large scale events. This leads me to the New Years Eve celebrations or lack thereof in the city.

Why doesn’t Vancouver have an official New Years Eve celebration? I’m not talking Time Square big here but something for us! We have the public space to do it, Robson Square, Jack Poole Plaza or Granville would be natural fits, yet the city can’t seem to put together an event.

Perhaps if there was some sort of benefit to the cycling community Mayor Robertson and his staff would have put something together.

The best the city could come up with is a celebration at Robson Square. They will host ice skating and a New Year’s Eve celebration from 5:00pm until 9:00pm featuring live entertainment and an early countdown for the kids. Nice if you’re a kid, but technically there’s still 3 hours left and we don’t live in Toronto. Wow.

The people in charge of fun in this city either don’t see the big picture or need additional funding. Either way, they have to find a way to make it happen! Time to grow up and stay up a little later Vancouver.
