A travel website that looks at cool spots in the world recently named a popular neighbourhood in the city the “Brooklyn of Vancouver.”
Brooklyn Of is a reputable independent travel website.
“A ‘Brooklyn’ is a metaphor, and we chose it on purpose. Brooklyn is the most classic example there is of a cool, up-and-coming neighborhood: say it and everyone instantly knows what you mean,” the website states.
And the special neighbourhood that the website anointed the Brooklyn of Vancouver is none other than Mount Pleasant.
So, it doesn’t mean that Mount Pleasant is like Brooklyn — just that it’s as cool as Brooklyn.
“Mount Pleasant is our pick for the Brooklyn of Vancouver. It has the exact thing this title tries to name: a scene that is creative without being precious, and sidewalks that fill up on a Saturday with nobody in a rush. Vancouverites are welcome to tell us we are wrong,” said Per, creator of Brooklyn Of.
The historic Mount Pleasant is no stranger to celebration and has been recognized for being one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world.
“Mount Pleasant is home to over 100 murals and at least 7 craft breweries within a few blocks of Main Street, many clustered around the historic Brewery Creek corridor between 2nd and 8th Avenue,” Brooklyn Of says.
It calls Mount Pleasant the coolest neighbourhood in Vancouver for its creative culture, independent food, and design-led hotels.
Brooklyn Of goes on to say that Main Street is the “spine” from which everything unfolds.
“Breweries, record shops, Vietnamese restaurants, and coffee roasters stacked block after block between 2nd and King Ed. The crowd is creative without being precious. Saturday morning the sidewalks fill up, and nobody seems to be in a rush.”
Other Canadian neighbourhoods that have gotten the nod include the Mile End in Montreal and West Queen West in Toronto.
Other global cities and neighbourhoods that were named to the website include Amsterdam Noord, Borgerhout, and Poblenou in Barcelona.
