Vancouver Mural Festival's best of the neighbourhood: South Granville

Sep 2 2020, 10:01 pm

The Vancouver Mural Festival (VMF) is well into its 2020 celebration and this year, it can be experienced in more neighbourhoods than ever.

From now until September 7, artists will paint and unveil more than 60 murals in nine different neighbourhoods — adding to the vast amount of art that already decorate Vancouver streets.

By expanding to more neighbourhoods and creating more murals than ever, VMF organizers are aiming to support local artists, communities, and businesses while inviting attendees to safely enjoy nearby neighbourhoods.

To enjoy VMF in a neighbourhood renowned for its array of fashion, dining and art galleries, invite your friends and head to South Granville:

Murals to see

Sean Jantzi

Through a lens of rich pastels and reductive use of simple shapes as substitutes for more familiar objects, Sean Jantzi’s work often combines the ordinary with the extraordinary. His primary medium is acrylic paint on canvas. Jantzi’s subject matter commonly includes first-person-perspectives that showcase the human anatomy, cocktails, pools, and tropical locales in an alluring fashion while confronting the idea of escapism and the desire to be somewhere “better”.

Sean’s mural “Summer in the Garden” can be found  2706 Granville (north wall at W.11th), and is proudly sponsored by Daily Hive.

Carrielynn Victor

Born and raised in Coast Salish territory, with an innate desire to make progressive change through art, voice and action, Carrielynn Victor is fueled by the passion to leave positive imprints within the earth and the people.

Victor’s VMF mural is of a trumpeter swan running on top of the water right before it takes off. The design style selected makes use of shapes found in traditional Salish woven patterns, and colours to create hard-edge three-dimensional shapes throughout the piece.

Victor’s piece is located at 2750 Granville St (east wall, behind The Stanley Theatre).

Tafui

Tafui is an independent Artist and Designer, originally from Xaymaca / Kingston, Jamaica. Her work spans various media which includes fine art, surface pattern design, illustration, spatial design, communication and product design. She is mainly known for her bold black and white abstract, repeating patterns, that embellish many of her products.

Tafui’s VMF mural Diaspora Diary is inspired by the idea that we are one and through the understanding of our histories and shared experiences we become united, as people, as cultures, and to the earth. Her mural statement explains, “Using mark-making as an homage to old methods of storytelling, I share my story by connecting myself with others and others to me. Each symbol represents a person from an aerial view, from a distance we are all the same.”

Discover Tafui’s mural at 3101 Granville.

Mega McGrath

Mega McGrath’s greatest focus lies in making art about the human condition. Her VMF piece is an ode to Charles Bukowski’s poetry; “What Matters Most Is How Well You Walk Through The Fire.” The sentiment speaks on the resilience of the human spirit in the face of upheaval and change. McGrath’s work focuses on exalting truths about the human condition through the use of ornamentation and colour.

Nadine Nevitt

Nadine Nevitt is a Toronto/Vancouver based artist who loves to draw and create. For her mural, Brunch Blooms, Nevitt was inspired by the natural beauty of South Granville, including the community gardens (especially at West 7th and Birch St), the love of fashion, interior design, and style amongst the neighbouring shops of the Breakfast Table.

The bold artwork she has created is an abstracted floral because of its scale and will read as and all-over pattern or wallpaper motif. The palette was inspired by the established interior of the restaurant, with consideration of the marigold coloured awning that already exists. The goal of this artwork is to make people inspired to get outside, reunite with friends again and feel safe going to brunch. If you have to wait in line or keep your distance you might as well take a few photos while doing it.

Nevitt’s mural is located at 3014 Granville Street (Breakfast Table, restaurant front).
