Simmons Mattress Gallery, a Vancouver store known for its closing sales, appears to be closed for real this time.
The notorious storefront located at 1001 West Broadway has had “everything must go” store closing sale signs for years. Many people believed that the signs were just a sales tactic, considering how long they had been up for.
However, brown paper now covers the windows, and there’s a for lease sign, signalling that it’s actually closed.
The Google listing for Simmons Mattress Gallery still suggests the store is in operation, without the usual “permanently closed” message that closed businesses are usually labelled with on the search platform. However, the official website does not work. Daily Hive Urbanized also attempted multiple phone calls to the storefront after opening, and the calls all went to voicemail.
According to LinkedIn, the mattress store was established in 1999, surviving as a business for multiple decades. Owner Neil Wurst has at least a couple of mattress stores attached to his name, including Simmons Mattress Gallery and Mattress Choice in Delta.
Simmons Mattress Gallery has also won multiple consumer choice awards for the best mattress store in Vancouver. The brand also has showrooms in Victoria (now closed) and Coquitlam.
While the store has a 4.5 rating on Google with mostly positive user feedback, some of the negative reviews touch on the fact that the store has suggested it was closing for over 10 years.
“why are yall still lying about closing after 10 years.. ur not sneaky we know ur little tactics,” one reviewer wrote.
Another review said, “The store closing banner is up for the past 11 years that I moved to Vancouver!! Unbelievable.”
We caught wind of the closure thanks to a post on the Vancouver subreddit that showed brown paper covering up the windows and a for lease sign.
“Wow. Can’t wait for the NEXT mattress place to open up and have this sign up for another 10 years,” one Redditor said in response.
Someone else quipped, “What was the store called? I always just assumed it was called ‘Store Closing: Everything Must Go.'”
We called the number on the for lease sign for the brokerage firm attached to the business, and the agent for the location was taken aback by the closure, too, informing us that the closure was news to them but that it had been expected.
We’ve left a message with Simmons Mattress Gallery in hopes of connecting with the owner about the store’s legacy.
