Closed Vancouver market owes thousands in employee grant case

A Vancouver market that permanently closed has been named in a tribunal dispute over unpaid grants.
In a BC Civil Resolution Tribunal case, Larry’s Market Vancouver Inc. (LMV) was named in a dispute worth thousands of dollars.
Larry’s operated in North Vancouver at Victory Ship Way and also had a location in Chinatown. Both locations are permanently closed according to Google. The market specialized in vegetarian groceries and goods. It also always had fresh offerings in its vegetarian deli, like pizza slices and other sweet and savoury treats.
According to the tribunal’s decision, Granted Consulting, a company that assists with grant applications, states that it helped Larry’s Market obtain grants for three employees.
“Based on a ‘success fee’ of 20 per cent of the grant amount, Granted claims $3,456.68,” the tribunal stated.
The tribunal decision notes that Larry’s Market didn’t deny that it owed some money, but stated it wasn’t as much as Granted was claiming. Larry’s claimed it only owed $2,047.50 for one employee’s grant, adding that it hadn’t received any money for the other employees.
Both parties entered into an agreement in December 2021. Based on that agreement, Granted was going to apply for three grants on behalf of Larry’s. The grants were for three employees, whom the tribunal referred to as LC, CS, and CB. LMV said it did not receive any money for CS or CB.
Larry’s told the tribunal that it could provide bank statements to prove it only received funds for one of the three grants, but it failed to present those statements as evidence.
Emails from the grant provider were proof enough for the tribunal that cheques were indeed issued to CS or CB.
For CS, an email from the grant provider stated that “it issued a cheque to LMV for $2,900 on September 2, 2022. Based on this evidence, I am satisfied that a grant of $2,900 was approved, which entitled Granted to 20 per cent of $2,900 plus five per cent GST, or $609.”
Granted also claimed service fees and interest on the unpaid grants.
In total, Larry’s was ordered to pay Granted $3,925.74, which included the unpaid debt and contractual interest, within 21 days of the tribunal’s decision.
