Thousands to take part in 'mass march' for BCGEU workers in downtown Vancouver

Members of the BCGEU and other unions will participate in what organizers are calling a “mass march” in downtown Vancouver tomorrow.

The downtown Vancouver march begins tomorrow, Oct. 1, at noon and will start at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

At 1:00 p.m., a rally will take place at Jack Poole Plaza. Speakers will include Finch and other union leaders. The march and rally are open to community members who stand in solidarity with the striking BCGEU workers, and thousands are expected to participate.

On Monday evening, it was announced that talks between the BCGEU and the B.C. government had broken down.

“The BCGEU returned to the bargaining table with the provincial government today for the first time since negotiations broke down in July. Unfortunately, talks have once again collapsed,” BCGEU said in a media release.

“We came to the table ready to negotiate, but the government presented an offer that was barely different from their last one,” said BCGEU president Paul Finch.

Daily Hive spoke to Finch last week, who suggested that the B.C. liquor and cannabis industry would be “deeply impacted” by strike escalation. Now, Finch is saying further job action will be necessary unless the government comes to the table in a real way.

“Our members are facing a real affordability crisis, and the government’s response continues to fall far short. Until the government is prepared to engage in real negotiations, job action will escalate,” Finch said.

“After four weeks of job action involving more than 15,000 public service workers across British Columbia, the provincial government returned to the bargaining table with an offer of just 2 per cent per year over two years—totalling only 4 per cent. BCGEU countered with an offer of 4 per cent each year over two years, for a total of 8 per cent,” BCGEU’s statement adds.
