The suspect in the Vancouver Lapu Lapu attack has been hit with several new charges.
According to the Vancouver Police Department, the B.C. Prosecution Service has now charged Kai-Ji Adam Lo with 31 counts of attempted murder.
Eleven people were killed in the tragic attack, and the 31 counts of attempted murder are in addition to the 11 counts of second-degree murder that Lo was previously charged with. The 31 counts of attempted murder are in relation to the surviving victims of the attack.
Chief Constable Steve Rai said, “This is another step toward answers and accountability in one of the most horrific incidents our city has ever faced, and I extend my deepest condolences to everyone impacted by the Lapu Lapu Festival attack.”
“At approximately 8:14 p.m. on April 26, a man drove into a large crowd of people attending the Lapu Lapu Day Festival near East 43rd Ave. and Fraser St.,” VPD said at the time.
Lo was the suspect in what the VPD called a ‘mass casualty event’ in Vancouver that took the lives of 11 people during the Lapu Lapu Festival and injured many others.
The event was referred to as the “darkest day” in Vancouver’s history by Rai following the attack, and it was revealed that the suspect, Lo, was already known to the police.
Lo’s fate now rests in the hands of the B.C. justice system.
“I have deep gratitude to all of the Vancouver Police personnel who have investigated this mass casualty incident, and I thank the BC Prosecution Service for its diligence during the charge-assessment process,” Rai added.
