Vancouver's young Jacob Tremblay picks up Best Young Actor Award for 'Room'

The adorable Jacob Tremblay is sweeping up attention and awards in the film industry thanks to his groundbreaking role in Emma Donoghue’s Room.

The nine-year-old actor from Vancouver took the stage on Sunday during the Critics’ Choice Awards to accept the trophy for Best Young Actor, and charmed audiences with a refreshing acceptance speech saying “This is so cool. This is the best day of my life.”

Tremblay played the role of Jack in 2015’s Room, opposite actress Brie Larson. The film is an adaptation of Canadian-Irish Emma Donoghue’s novel about a young woman abducted and kept inside a tiny locked room with no windows except for a small skylight. Sometime before the book’s start, the woman, known simply as Ma, is impregnated by her captor and she must raise Jack without ever stepping foot outside.

Jack is only six during the film’s time-frame, but knows nothing about the real world outside. His cognizance of what is real and what’s not, and the size and scope of the world outside their room, made the novel a masterpiece of Canadian literature and translates into the movie in an intellectually fascinating way.

Tremblay’s performance as Jack is the most tragic yet mesmerizing element in the film, and it’s not going unnoticed. The film has garnered four nominations at this year’s Oscars, three at January’s Golden Globe Awards, and also won the People’s Choice Awards at both the Vancouver and Toronto Film Festivals.

After he picked up the Best Young Actor Award on Sunday, Tremblay was caught dancing and singing to “Uptown Funk” at an after-party, but only after charming the audience with an adorable acceptance speech featuring a nod to his love of Star Wars.

“I know where to put this,” he said, motioning to the crystal statue in his hand, “Right on the shelf right beside my Millennium Falcon.”

He also acknowledged his parents, one of whom has become a social media sensation after walking the red-carpet with Tremblay earlier this year. His father, name unknown, is currently a police officer with the Vancouver Police Department and has been noted online for his good looks.
