YVR launches new online tool to help travellers support Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has announced a new initiative to accelerate the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

YVR’s new online calculator tool allows travellers to estimate their flight’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to the use of SAF.

What is SAF

A lower-carbon alternative to fossil jet fuel, SAF is made from renewable materials such as municipal solid waste, cooking waste, meat production waste, and agricultural and forestry residues. That means it’s not a fossil fuel and uses carbon already in the biosphere.

SAF emissions are estimated to be 80 per cent lower than fossil jet fuel on a lifecycle basis. SAF also improves air quality by reducing particulate matter and sulphur emissions compared to fossil jet fuel.

The aviation industry is actively working towards achieving net zero by 2050, and SAF will be a key part of achieving it.

Leading the industry’s transition 

As the second busiest airport in Canada, it’s a pretty big deal that YVR is committed to reducing emissions from its own operations. But that’s not all; YVR is also stepping into a leadership role to increase SAF usage across the industry. 

While SAF has great potential, its supply is limited and costs more than conventional jet fuel. Increasing demand is needed to scale production and increase availability.
