An iconic horror film and book has inspired a TV series that will be shot in Metro Vancouver.

Carrie, a 1974 novel written by acclaimed horror writer Stephen King, is getting a TV show with Mike Flanagan at the helm.

Flanagan has some experience with King’s stories, as he was the director and writer of the sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep.

He also directed Oculus and The Life of Chuck.

King’s 1974 novel inspired the 1976 film, which starred Sissy Spacek and Melanie Griffith and was directed by Brian De Palma. The film was both a box office and critical success, being one of the only horror films nominated for Academy Awards.

While the film spawned several sequels, they never received the same level of acclaim as the original 1976 flick.

Details on the series are slim, but what we do know is that it’s scheduled to start shooting in Vancouver this June, one month after a not-so-scary show is scheduled to wrap production. CreativeBC lists Reunion MHC Productions as the local production company, and the production address is 2400 Boundary Rd. in Burnaby.

Summer H. Howell has been cast as the titular Carrie. Flanagan also has some experience with horror television, as he was involved with The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Midnight Club.

Some other productions MHC has been involved in include The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power, Alice, Tin Man, and Masters of Horror.

For those who haven’t seen or read the original movie or book, the plot revolves around a high school student named Carrie who is relentlessly bullied. At some point, Carrie discovers the ability to control objects from a distance and eventually uses this power to take revenge against those who mocked her.
