If you were hoping to rent an Airbnb for a Halloween party in Vancouver, be advised that the rental platform is putting in some measures to prevent you from getting too wild.
In a release, Airbnb has revealed that it’s deploying anti-party technology across Canada, and revealed how many partygoers in Vancouver have been deterred.
“Airbnb is rolling out this technology to try to reduce the risk of parties, emphasizing our commitment to support our hosts and local communities,” the platform said in a news release.
Airbnb currently has a global party ban in place.
Over the Halloween period last year, thanks to the anti-party tech, Airbnb singled out the city specifically, saying around 180 people in Vancouver were deterred from booking an entire home. Six thousand three hundred people were deterred across Canada.
Airbnb also saw a reduction in the number of parties that were reported over the Halloween party last year.
“Airbnb is also reminding parents, grandparents, and other adults not to book stays for anyone else. Third-party bookings – when a user books a listing for someone else and won’t be there themselves – are prohibited,” the platform added.
Airbnb says its anti-party technology is doing what it was intended to do.
“It’s important to note that parties remain extremely rare on Airbnb. In 2024, just 0.03 per cent of reservations in B.C. resulted in an allegation of a party. What’s more, thanks in part to proactive measures like our anti-party technology, we’ve seen a 57 per cent decrease in the rate of party reports to us in B.C. since introducing our global party ban policy in 2020.”
This is the fifth year that Airbnb has implemented the tool.
Airbnb has also been in the news in recent weeks due to its feelings about the FIFA World Cup, suggesting Vancouver’s reputation is at risk without more accommodations.
