Heat records smashed across B.C., but relief on the way for Vancouver forecast

The Vancouver forecast continues to be red hot in the month of July, with a dozen temperature records broken across the province this week, including a 98-year-old historical high.

According to the daily weather summaries from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), 12 B.C. spots tied or set records for June 14, 2026.

This comes as an air quality warning continues across Metro Vancouver due to ongoing wildfires in the Fraser Canyon and Manning Park region.

West Vancouver hit a daily maximum temperature record on July 22 of 32.3°C.

The previous record for the date was 32°C, a difference of 0.3°C, set in 2002. Records for the area have been kept since 1976.

Pitt Meadows recorded a new historical high of 35.9°C, a full degree higher than the previous mark set in 2006.

Abbotsford also reached a new high for the date with 35.4°C, breaking a 20-year-old record by 0.9°C.

Other notable records set yesterday include Lytton, which reached 41.2 °C, and Duncan, which broke a 98-year-old record with a new high temperature of 34.6°C.

Several of the previous high-temperature marks were set decades ago.

ECCC meteorologist Janelle Gergely told Daily Hive that a trough is coming into the region.

“There’s a possibility of a few days of showers, which is pretty rare for the Metro Vancouver region,” explained Gergely. “Usually it’s just one day during the summer.”

“We were in an upper ridge that brought high temperatures to the region. Now the overall mass is changing, with cooler air moving in. There is a south-westerly flow, bringing in winds from the water, keeping things cool.”

There is a 60 per cent chance of showers on Friday night and on Saturday, with a 30 per cent chance of showers lingering on Sunday.

Vancouver temperatures will drop a few degrees, down to 21°C and 22°C from Saturday until next Wednesday in the forecast.

However, things will begin clearing up for the last week of July as more sunshine returns to the forecast.
