Young child killed in East Vancouver house fire

Jan 7 2017, 12:10 am

A devastating house fire in East Vancouver on Thursday afternoon has killed one young child and left five other people in hospital.

At approximately 3 pm, a two-alarm fire began at a residence located in the area of East 15th Avenue and Nootka Street. The child was pronounced dead at the scene, but the age and gender of the victim has not been released at this time.

Two other children and three adults were sent to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and burn injuries.

There were initially reports that fire trucks had difficulty responding to the fire due to the icy, hilly roads in the neighbourhood, but Vancouver Fire Rescue later stated that there were no delays and the response time for the first fire truck was under target.

The cause of the fire is not known and an investigation is ongoing.
