Sakura Days Japenese festival

  • What: The festival is a showcase of Japanese cultural and performing arts, cuisine, and business while celebrating spring and of course, the cherry blossom. Highlights of the weekend include an evening lantern parade on Saturday evening, Tsugaru Shamisen (a traditional genre of music), featuring Kohei Honda and world-renowned Japanese drum player, Keita Kanezashi on both days, and Vancouver Sings One Song (VSOS) conducted by Kathryn Nicholson and the host choir, Sound Eclectic, on both days as well.

Whistler World Ski and Snowboard Festival

  • What: The main events taking place on the mountain include the Saudan Couloir Ski Race Extreme, the Monster Energy Boarderstyle World Championships, and Big Air events in both skiing and snowboarding. A 72-hour filmmakers and photographer showdown will run during the course of the week. There will also be apres-ski and late-night parties held on a regular basis around the city, with live music constantly being played at the Skiers Plaza. A number of clubs around Whistler will also be holding evening events.

Salish Weaving Fashion Show

  • What: The Museum of Anthropology at UBC invites visitors to celebrate the closing of the Fabric of Our Land exhibition with a Salish Weaving Fashion Show. Weavers will walk down the catwalk in MOA’s iconic Great Hall, modelling their fabulous works.

City in Flux: Panel Discussion

  • What: A panel discussion exploring the changing landscape of the Lower Mainland and its implications for the future. Panellists include exhibiting artist Carolina de la Cajiga; Raymond Fung, Director of Engineering and Transportation at the District of West Vancouver; Nathan Pachal, Langley City Councillor and author of the transportation blog The South Fraser, and Bryce Tupper, Vice President of Planning and Development for British Pacific Properties. The discussion will be moderated by Greg Bellerby, editor of The West Coast Modern House and former director/curator of the Charles H. Scott Gallery at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.

Canada Beer Run – Vancouver 2018

  • What: An 8.9 km fun run with stops at five different breweries: Big Rock Brewery, Red Truck Brewery, Andina Brewing Company, Off The Rail Brewing Company, Parallel 49 Brewing Company.

Erin Costelo

  • What: An intimate concert by singer-songwriter/producer Erin Costelo. She has opened for Mavis Staples, Dr. John and Bettye Lavette, and has recently performed with Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble Band. Erin’s latest, self-produced album Down Below, the Status Quo recently won Solo Recording of the Year at the Nova Scotia Music Awards and is nominated for four East Coast Music Awards.

British Home Children: Uncovering the Hidden Stories

  • What: Over 100,000 children were sent to Canada as indentured workers between 1833 and 1949. Authors Patricia Skidmore and Beryl Young both grew up not realizing their parents were child migrants. They talk about how they discovered and researched the surprising stories of their parents.

Hands on Fresh Pasta Making with Pasta Boy Peter

  • What: You may not have an Italian Mamma, but now you can learn to make pasta like one. In this hands-on class, professional cook, artisan pasta maker and actor Peter Ciuffa of Pasta Boy Peter provides all the ingredients, equipment and knowledge so that you can learn to make his family’s recipes for those you love. Peter will teach you a sauce, you’ll sample his dish and go home with pasta for two which you just made.
