Vancouver Dog Killer Gets 60 Days in Jail

Remember Captain, the German Shepherd that was left for dead in a Vancouver dumpster last summer? Almost a year later, the accused, Brian Whitlock has been sentenced to 60-days in jail and three years probation for beating a dog with a baseball bat and leaving him for dead in a dumpster.

CBC is also reporting that Whitlock has been given three years probation and a lifetime ban on owning pets. He has received credit for time already served and may be out in as early as seven days.

The decision had animal rights activists and dog lovers fuming, to the point that Whitlock was in danger of vigilante justice. Fortunately, Whitlock’s sentence also includes a lifetime ban from owning animals.

Although pleading guilty, Whitlock’s lawyers blamed the incident on mental illness, claming that Whitlock believed Captain was poisoned after the dog started behaving strangely after a meal. Therefore, Whitlock decided to put his dog out of its misery.

Captain died shortly after the SPCA attempted to save his life.
