Don't dodge it, catch the fun with the Vancouver Dodgeball League

With its gaining popularity, you might have heard of that ‘evasive’ new game in town, ‘hitting’ the gyms of the city as young (and young-at-heart) adults flock to dodge, duck, dip, and dive. Well, if you’ve ever thought to try your hand at dodgeball, now’s your chance!

The Vancouver Dodgeball League (VDL) – the first, the largest, and the only non-profit dodgeball organization in this city – is starting their 19th season next week, and is looking for new faces to join in on the fun! With over 1,400 players, nearly 200 teams play across different divisions, tiered from beginner to intermediate to competitive, allowing for players of all skill levels to join.

VDLS15-ThPlayoffs

VDL’s mission is to advance dodgeball in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, building a diverse community based on fun, fitness, service, and spirit. Run entirely by volunteers, the league highly values fair play and sportsmanship, as games are officiated through peer refereeing. Besides ten weeks of regular season play and playoffs, VDL also hosts a variety of special events for its community, such as skills clinics, charity tournaments, and a legendary pub night celebration.

“I feel that a lot of people have misconceptions about the game of dodgeball from either movies or from their days in elementary or high school, in that it’s either a kids’ game or that it’s a violent sport,” said Ka Wa Lee, Executive Director of VDL.

“The game is actually a lot like softball or ultimate Frisbee. It is very community-oriented and everyone is just out there to have fun and meet new people. Those who have tried our league quickly become addicted to the game and some end up playing up to four nights a week. It’s such a fun sport that even the Vancouver Canucks incorporated dodgeball during their training camp last fall as part of their team building.”
