Close call crash at Vancouver daycare leads to gas line damage, building evacuations

A car crash at a Vancouver daycare has led to traffic impacts in the area and some building evacuations.
Someone associated with the daycare contacted Daily Hive with some information, including pictures of the scene near West 33rd Avenue and Mackenzie Street.
The tipster, who chose to remain anonymous, said that the car crashed into the playground of the daycare, stating that it was lucky that the kids weren’t out playing.
Daily Hive obtained more information from Vancouver Fire Rescue Services, which was on the scene on Wednesday morning.

According to the VFRS on-duty Assistant Chief Keith Stewart, the vehicle involved hit a gas line, and the daycare was subsequently evacuated.
In further communications with VFRS Chief Karen Fry, Daily Hive was informed that the 4800-Block of Mackenzie is shut down and that five buildings have been evacuated as a precaution. FortisBC was also on route to the scene.
“We’ve evacuated all the areas that we had to, and everyone right now is safe. We had one patient in the vehicle,” Stewart said, adding that they were being looked after by BC Ambulance Services. He also said that they were in a holding pattern until FortisBC could shut the gas off to the structure.
No other injuries were reported.
VPD was also on scene directing traffic in the area, and some buses needed to be diverted.

FortisBC told Daily Hive that the system was damaged by an external party. Its crews are on-site making repairs. Currently, there’s no timeline for when the repairs will be completed.
The daycare is located between Shaughnessy and the Dunbar area of Vancouver. The daycare is on the corner of the block, next to a couple of markets and other retail outlets.
In an update from FortisBC just after noon, the utility shared that crews had stopped the flow of gas to the area and that Mackenzie Street has fully opened. West 33rd Avenue is expected to remain closed at the Mackenzie intersection while crews make repairs.
