Video highlights the danger Vancouver pedestrians and cyclists face regularly

Almost 4,000 cyclists and pedestrians are injured in crashes with vehicles in the province every year, and some new ICBC footage is showing how some of those incidents play out in Vancouver.

ICBC put out its video as warmer weather has brought more people outside, and is urging drivers to slow down and look for pedestrians and cyclists, especially when turning at intersections.

The video is shown from both the cyclist and pedestrian perspectives around Metro Vancouver, illustrating a few close calls between road users.

In one segment of the b-roll footage, a cyclist progresses through an intersection on a green light and is completely cut off by a driver.

ICBC says that 3,827 pedestrians and cyclists are injured every year, and that most of those crashes occur at intersections.

“We all deserve to stay safe on our roads, and we’re asking drivers to slow down, stay focused and watch for others,” ICBC road safety manager Kathleen Nadalin said in a release.

ICBC isn’t the only entity that has been trying to raise awareness about road safety for cyclists and pedestrians. For the past year, Vision Zero Vancouver has ramped up its awareness campaigns about road safety for pedestrians and folks travelling on bicycles.

Earlier this year, Vision Zero Vancouver put out a blog post about the fact that one of its advocates was hit and injured by a driver while returning from a road safety meeting.

The post said that the advocate was hit while travelling on a Lime scooter.

The advocate was “turning left onto Nootka St and despite indicating both with a hand signal and the scooter’s integrated turn signal, the driver behind her decided to pass on Fox’s left in the intersection. She was hit and knocked to the ground. She is left with a broken wrist that will significantly impact her ability to fulfill work and parenting responsibilities.”

The group has also called for bollards at a deadly intersection earlier this year.
