Vancouver condo owner frustrated by 'designated pet door' in her building

A Vancouver condo owner is frustrated that pet owners in her building must take a separate entrance from the main door when they have their animals.
Kacy Wu first found out about this ‘designated pet door’ in December 2025, shortly after she moved back to Vancouver after living in the U.S. for a year.
One day, when she was walking her dog, she was told she had to take a different door.
“I was like, ‘what?'” Wu said to Daily Hive.
The concierge told her that the building’s strata started this policy in January 2025.
“The side entrance is less convenient and feels like a secondary access point and also feels a bit unsafe during certain times, raising concerns about fairness and how residents are treated in their own homes,” Wu said in an email.
“I wish, when they are making the rules, it could be more considerate and more inclusive,” she said.
Wu, the owner of a “very cute” 10-year-old husky, said she bought her condo in 2023 because she had a dog. She had been renting before, but the owner had sold her unit, and she needed to move. She said it can be challenging to find a pet-friendly rental.

As a first-time homebuyer at the time, Wu didn’t have much knowledge of stratas and that they could “take a lot of control over my ownership, actually.”
She said that she didn’t pay too much attention to who the strata or property management company was. If she were giving advice to someone on the market for a condo now, she said she would tell them to “get to know who the strata is.”
“Like, ‘you can’t do this, you can’t do that.'”
Visitor parking fees increased
Another policy that surprised Wu is the fees for visitor parking. Wu only learned about it earlier this month, when she had a visitor use the parking lot.
The cost is now $10 for every four hours, plus $20 for overnight, between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m.
“Then they quoted me to pay like $80 for Saturday and Sunday parking,” she said.
“I wouldn’t expect [that when] people come to visit me, they will need to pay for parking. And it’s so expensive,” she said. “I wish everyone can enjoy the freedom to invite visitors to their home without worrying about extra fees. ”
She learned that this has been in place since the summer of 2024.
Wu said that while she contacted the strata and asked for the reason for both the pet owner’s entrance and visitor parking fees, she didn’t get any answers.
Daily Hive reached out to Rancho Group, the property management company for Wu’s building, but did not hear back.
