The first signs of spring are upon us. Hundreds of trees in Vancouver began blooming in mid-February, and this is of course only the beginning before the streets explode with colours of white and pink.

There are over 90,000 floral trees in the streets of Vancouver, and nearly half of these trees are the Japanese cherry variety. According to the organizers of the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival (VCBF), the trees that are blooming at the moment are ‘Whitcomb’ cherries. The blooming process will likely be accelerated by this week’s sunny and warmer weather.

Normally, most trees will likely show signs of blooms towards the middle of March, with blooms peaking in April. To celebrate the occasion, VCBF is organizing a cherry blossom barge flotilla on April 16 and 17: A tug boat will tow a barge with 40 cherry blossom trees around Vancouver’s local waters.

Check out last year’s Vancity Buzz guide for where to see large clusters of cherry blossom blooms in Metro Vancouver.
