Vancouver Cheap Eats: Indian Food

Dec 19 2017, 7:48 pm

There are a few reasons why we love Indian food. For one, it’s never bland. Two, it takes the term “spicy” to an entirely new level. And three, well, it’s downright delicious. When your taste buds feel like venturing to South Asia, grab five bucks and head to these Indian spots offering classic eats for a Chowmenow budget.

There’s plenty of traditional Indian fare for under $5, including a small Aloo Mutter (potatoes and peas cooked in tomatoes, garlic and ginger) and the vegetarian pakoras. However, you can’t pass up beef, chicken, or veggie samosas that are 2 for a buck!

The samosas here are more expensive than what we’ve seen so far, but they have one advantage, and it’s all in the size. Served in vegetarian flavours like potato pea, spinach and feta, tofu rice, and chickpea, they come baked or fried. You can also get two veggie, tofu, and panir pakoras for $3.95, or three of the zucchini and lentil pakoras for the same price. Each comes with a sauce of your choice for no additional charge.

Catch them on the right day and you’ll be eating awesome Indian food with a pretty great view. Curry 2 U on Granville Island has a Lentil & Rice Bowl on Tuesdays for $4.05, but if you catch their promocode on Twitter the price comes down to $3. You also can’t miss Tiffin Thursday, where you can refill your plate for $5.
