Former Vancouver Canucks goalie Arturs Silovs is quite happy to now have a regular practice facility.
Silovs, who logged 19 starts with the Canucks over the span of three seasons, is now a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins after being traded for prospect Chase Stillman and a 2027 fourth-round pick.
Things have gotten off to a great start for Silovs in Pittsburgh, as he picked up a shutout versus the New York Rangers in his debut. While more playing time certainly helps, a big part of the 24-year-old’s excitement when it comes to joining the Penguins is the fact that they have a practice facility in the same arena they play out of.
“I mean, practice rink, we didn’t have it back in Vancouver. We didn’t have it,” Silovs said. “We were skating [at] the university, UBC. “Here it’s like, there’s your own locker room, you don’t have to move your things all the time. You can skate, do your stuff to improve. I think it’s a huge bonus for the team.”

The Canucks’ practice facility, or lack thereof, has been a major talking point in Vancouver over the years. They usually practice at Rogers Arena, but have to move things to UBC whenever the building is unavailable.
“We’re open to any area within a half-hour drive of downtown Vancouver,” Rutherford said in late September in regards to building a practice facility. “Since I’ve been here, we’ve worked on this, and we’ve come close to a point where we could get one, but there is always political reasons or this and that.”
“I’ve been pushed hard by Francesco [Aquilini], our owner, to figure this out. I do think we have a few options that we actually have a chance of moving forward.”
The Canucks are the lone NHL team without their own practice facility. It’s clear that getting one is a major goal for this organization, but when it will actually happen remains to be seen.
