Vancouver Canucks fans aren’t being shy about their thoughts on the acquisition of Evander Kane this morning.
The Edmonton Oilers headed into the offseason with the goal of freeing up some cap space, and they were able to get a good start on that, trading Kane to the Canucks in exchange for a 2025 fourth-round draft pick. The Canucks will be taking on all of Kane’s $5.125 million cap hit.
Kane missed the entire 2024-25 season due to injury, but proved he was still an effective player in the playoffs, putting up six goals and 12 points in 21 games. While the Canucks are getting a good player, however, it is hard to believe there is zero retention in this deal. That, paired with Kane’s questionable past behaviour, has many in Vancouver hating this trade.
This management team spent months ripping into Miller and Pettersson for creating a toxic environment and blaming last season on them instead of taking any responsibility.
Then they go out and trade for Evander Kane.
You can't even make this up.

Absolute joke. Desperate and terrible move by the #Canucks.
All my Oiler friends are celebrating today.

Others mentioned that Kane feels like a replacement for pending UFA Brock Boeser, albeit a very underwhelming one in their eyes.
“Going from Brock Boeser to Evander Kane is like trading in a golden retriever for a raccoon in a leather jacket,” user malcolmert wrote.
It wasn’t just those on X who expressed their dismay, either, as several commented their displeasure with the trade on a Canucks Instagram post.

While the vast majority of Canucks fans seem to be frustrated by this move, there are some that see the benefit of adding the nine-time 20-goal scorer.
People are ripping this move, but I honestly don’t hate it. He’s still a good player, and will likely be motivated to have a good season by playing in his home town and becoming a ufa in one season.

As for Kane himself, he seems to be quite excited to have the opportunity to play for his hometown city for the first time in his NHL career.
“I’m incredibly excited for the next chapter of my career as I join the Canucks,” Kane wrote following news of the trade. “It’s an honor to become part of an organization and team I grew up watching as a kid. Vancouver is a city that lives and breathes hockey, I’m looking forward to the opportunity to play in front of my hometown as I did many years ago as a Vancouver Giant.”
Kane will now look to help a Canucks team that missed the playoffs by six points last season, while also looking to have some big individual stats to help ensure a big contract for the 2026-27 season and perhaps beyond.
