The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide: Belgard Kitchen

Dec 19 2017, 2:15 pm

We’re taking a tasty tour of Vancouver’s many brunches to create The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide. This week we’re at Belgard Kitchen for a stellar brunch in East Vancouver.

Occupying space in the Settlement Building on a nondescript side street in the Railtown District of East Vancouver, Belgard Kitchen dishes up a delicious range of creatively casual brunch fare.

With a focus on sourcing as many local ingredients as possible, Belgard Kitchen’s menu features a solid list of seasonal and globally inspired dishes that include a breakfast bowl of quinoa, avocado, goat cheese, arugula, toasted nuts and poached eggs; smashed avocado on lightly charred sourdough; coconut quinoa porridge; a Belgard brunch burger; steak and eggs; Swedish pancakes, and more.

Not only does every single item on Belgard Kitchen’s menu sound tempting but every plate travelling from the kitchen to the floor looks incredible.

Those on the hunt for something fresh and robust in flavour, should dig into the Belgard Meatball Brunch Skillet ($15). Served in hot cast-iron skillet, four made-in-house meatballs lay in a bed of fresh mozzarella, San Marzano tomato sauce, smoky onion and Parmesan cream and are topped with two perfectly poached eggs with yellow running yolks. Like a lot of their other meals this one comes with side of crunchy oven-roasted spuds too.

Seal the deal with a coffee, cider mimosa or even a flight of beer!

While the meals at Belgard Kitchen are sure to leave you feeling satisfied, the portion sizes aren’t excessively huge so you won’t feel weighed down or the need to loosen your belt a notch.

In addition to honest cooking, part of Belgard Kitchen’s charm is the building, a 90-year-old warehouse it shares with Vancouver Urban Winery and Postmark Brewing. Indeed, it is the warehouse-chic plot that makes dining at Belgard Kitchen such an utterly unique experience in Vancouver.

Through a set of grand wooden doors a bright, airy, industrial space with high ceilings and natural timbers awaits. Think casual, rustic elegance at it’s finest. The restaurant houses a vintage fireplace, rugged wooden tables, thoughtful antique decorations, and a wall of wine barrels.

Aside from the barrage of details to admire, there’s also an open kitchen allowing patrons to see what’s cooking, as well as impressive bar with a gleaming row of wine taps.

Seating, which works on a first come first serve basis comes in a variety of forms. Spread around the room are high top, bar and individual tables as well as a couple of rounded hideaway booths. Generous quarters makes for a much more pleasurable dining experience, in that diners are not seated on top of each other, which seems to happen all too often these days.

With a long list of exceptional brunch fare (that keeps diners coming back time and time again), a casual vibe, a beautiful interior and courteous and attentive service, Belgard Kitchen is a fantastic and must-try brunch spot in Vancouver.
