Nearly 16,500 runners showed up for the 45th BMO Vancouver Marathon on Sunday. Not only is it the city’s only marathon, it’s been ranked among the top destination marathons by Forbes Magazine and CNN Travel, so it’s hardly surprising that participants hailed from 60 different countries.
The event included a 42 kilometre marathon, a 21 kilometre half marathon, an eight kilometre race, and a relay. Kenyan Daniel Kipkoech and Hirut Guangul of Ethiopia won the men’s and women’s marathons with times of two hours, 21 minutes and two hours, 39 minutes respectively.
“In 1972, the Vancouver Marathon had 32 finishers,” Charlene Krepiakevich, Executive Director of the Vancouver International Marathon Society, said in a release. “This year, the six unique race experiences led to one of the highest number of finishers recorded in the event’s history at nearly 14,000 total finishers.”
“We are proud to build on this legacy created 45 years ago, and to expand the race experiences to athletes of all abilities, young and old,” Krepiakevich said. “We are grateful to have such support from the City of Vancouver, sponsors, and locals.”
