While Amazon confirmed it will open a second Vancouver office, the company will not be bringing their second global headquarters here.
That information came to light this morning, as the company revealed which cities – out of more than 100 that submitted applications – had been shortlisted as a possible location for it, and Vancouver was not among them.
In fact, the only Canadian city to be shortlisted was Toronto.
However, news of the failed bid didn’t stop Vancouverites from taking to social media to share their thoughts on the failed bid.
Here’s what they had to say.
the relief when your city isn’t on the amazon short list. Vancouver is already a rich persons playground. it doesnt need help.

As predicted #Vancouver didn’t make the cut for #AmazonHQ2. @jjhorgan as long as #BC is open to business with real estate criminals, we are closed for everyone else #VanRE #BCPoli #VanPoli #Amazon #HQ2

This shortlist looks like most bands “North American” tours; All US cities or counties, plus Toronto. Montgomery County, Maryland is on there, but Calgary or Vancouver isn’t? This is confirmation that @amazon never had any intention of leaving the United States for #AmazonHQ2 pic.twitter.com/dVRL7u1uSJ

People who think Amazon HQ2 not coming to Vancouver is a good thing, are probably the same people who think the Cambie Street bike lane is a good idea.

What? Amazon passed on Vancouver? I mean it has mountains and the ocean, and people — well, not hard-working. Mostly homeless and $foriegn.

“Vancouver doesn’t make short list for second Amazon headquarters.” And every renter in the city breathes a sigh of relief.

Do you realize how stupid it would be to have Amazon’s new HQ just a few hours away from the first one? Vancouver was never a real option.

On one hand, fuck Amazon and this dog and pony show to win its adoration. On the other hand, it’s pretty entitled NIMBYism to shit on the idea of bringing a good number of new jobs to town.

Vancouver left of Amazon’s short list for HQ, thank goodness.

Even Amazon can’t afford to live in Vancouver!
— Krayyonnz (@chambee) January 18, 2018
Vancouver is already the winner. Amazon has been investing continually into Vancouver with several facilities here now supporting the local economy and more planned.

I’m disappointed Vancouver didn’t even make the final 20 list for Amazon’s 2nd HQ
— Elite Kiter (@1337K1t3R) January 18, 2018
Sad to hear that Amazon isnt coming to Vancouver.
Good luck Toronto! @amazon— Meena Mann (@MeenaMann) January 18, 2018
Vancouver never had a chance for one simple reason: it’s too close to Seattle. Any earthquake, bad weather, or what-have-you that knocks one down will hit the other. Amazon stated from the get-go that they want redundancy.
