Last night, I attended the launch of Uva by Day. Uva is located inside the Moda Hotel, steps away from the Orpheum. It’s a great place for a drink before a show, where you can spend some time just nibbling on their charcuteries and cheese, while sipping on perfectly paired wines and cocktails.
In this new rendition of Uva (by Day), guests are served more standard lunch fare, soups, salads and sandwiches. Making it easy to grab and go, sandwiches are wrapped in butcher paper unless otherwise requested. No meal is complete without dessert and they don’t disappoint. An order of Hot Zeppoli (on the right in the image above) is a great way to finish off your lunch, along with their many espresso drinks.
We were treated to some Beef Carpaccio Rolls, which were served on tablespoons with some greens inside. The beef just just barely seared and was very tender.
I sampled three of their sandwiches, starting with the Braised Pork Shoulder sandwich. The apple bacon jam was good blend of sweet and savory, and gave the sandwich a rich moistness.
For vegetarians, there is the Vegetale, and features grilled zucchini, olives and eggplant. A sprinkling of goat cheese and greens makes this quite a hearty and tasty sandwich.
Perhaps my favourite of the night was the Confit Chicken & Prosciutto. The chicken is meltingly tender and the prosciutto give it a nice saltiness. There is also some grilled radicchio for the slightly bittersweet flavour.
In addition, Lauren Mote, bar manager and co-proprietor of the Bittered Sling has started revamping the cocktail lists, and many of the drinks feature her small-batch bitters & extracts.
I tried two cocktails and that was more than enough for me. My first one was the Gin-Gin Donkey, featuring gin (of course) but also ginger wine. The second cocktail was called Liberation, and has calvados, campari and celery bitters. Liberation was probably the more potent of the two.
