Joe Biden just used footage of Trudeau in Trump attack ad

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has found himself featured in a new campaign ad for the US presidential election.

The clip of Trudeau and other world leaders — including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte — seemingly laughing about US President Donald Trump that made headlines yesterday has been re-purposed by Joe Biden’s team to kick off an attack ad on Trump.

The 63-second campaign ad goes on to show news clips of Trump’s various meetings with other world leaders, though the entire premise appears to be centred on what was seen in the Trudeau clip: that “The world is laughing at President Trump,” Biden wrote in an accompanying tweet.

“They see him for what he really is: dangerously incompetent and incapable of world leadership.”

Trump had evidently seen, or at least heard of, the initial clip following its release, calling Trudeau “two-faced” to media while sitting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, though he’d also added that the prime minister is a “nice guy.”

Trudeau held a press conference shortly after Trump’s response to the clip, and while he did mention the situation, he didn’t offer an apology to the US president.

“Last night, I made a reference to the fact that there was an unscheduled press conference before my meeting with President Trump and I was happy to take part of it, but it was certainly notable, I’ve had a number of good conversations with the president over the course of this day and yesterday,” Trudeau said on Wednesday.

According to Trump, some of that discussion was around Canada’s contributions to NATO.

“The truth is I called him out on the fact that he’s not paying 2% [NATO funding] and I guess he’s not very happy about it,” Trump said while sitting with Chancellor Merkel, adding that “he should be paying 2%” and that Canada “has money.”

“I can imagine he’s not that happy, but that’s the way it is.”
