Umberto Menghi is one of the longstanding luminaries in the Vancouver food scene, and the veteran restaurateur has just confirmed he will open Giardino Restaurant this spring.
Menghi’s beloved Il Giardino restaurant closed its doors in April 2013, and fans of his signature Italian cuisine have been hungering to hear what his next culinary move was. With his eye on a location for a year now, Menghi has just revealed his plans to open up this spring at 1328 Hornby Street.
Giardino Restaurant will offer diners a taste of Menghi’s Tuscan-inspired fare in a space that will transport guests right to Italy. The restaurant, which is moving into the former IK2GO space, will also boast an outdoor garden patio, high ceilings, and Tuscan-inspired artwork.
Menghi cautions, though, that despite the name similarity, this is not a reboot of Il Giardino. “Giardino Restaurant is going to feature the Tuscan Italian food many have come to know. However, it is not a reopening of Il Giardino. It’s going to have its own personality. I can’t wait to open the doors to guests old and new,” says Menghi.
While Menghi hasn’t been cooking in Vancouver for almost two years now, he has been operating two restaurants, Il Caminetto and Trattoria, in Whistler. He says he knew he wasn’t going to stay away from Vancouver forever. “It is in my blood,” says Menghi.
