The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide: Mamie Taylor's

We’re taking a tasty tour of Vancouver’s many brunches to create The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide. This week we’re at Mamie Taylor’s for some Southern eats in Chinatown.

Tucked away on a bustling stretch of East Georgia Street in Vancouver’s Chinatown, Mamie Taylor’s caters to hungry locals by offering a casual setting in which to savour long established brunch favs, Southern inspired modern American dishes and carefully crafted breakfast cocktails.


Taking cues from Chef Tobias Grignon and various regional styles of the Southern states, Mamie Taylor’s menu is filled with delicious Southern staples like steak and grits ($19), served with white cheddar and grilled scallions; ham hock hash ($14), with a side of baby potatoes, brussel sprouts, mustard and fried egg; and chili braised pork shoulder ($13), with poached eggs, corn bread, Hollandaise and salsa verde.

Just begging to be eaten is Mamie Taylor’s signature dish of fried chicken and waffles ($16). Served with pickled jalapeños and red cabbage slaw and drizzled in a sweet bourbon honey this meal is wickedly delicious and a must order! The chicken is crisp, moist and perfectly seasoned, while the waffles are delightfully light and fluffy.


There are a range of other brunch temptations too which include: biscuit Benny with home fries, Hollandaise and thick-cut bacon ($13); stuffed French toast ($11) with milk caramel, apples, walnuts and crème fraiche: and a towering Cobb salad ($15), piled high with romaine lettuce, red kale, pork belly, pickled pears and crispy egg, topped with a Stilton dressing.

Although the dishes at Mamie Taylor’s tend to be rather meat-centric, vegetarian diners can enjoy a handful of brunch plates and sides too.

While Mamie Taylor’s bottomless coffee will suffice most diners, the restaurant’s bar also offers something a little stronger to pair with the meal in the way of house cocktails, like the Mamie Mimosa ($10), a fruity mix of fresh orange juice, passion fruit and bubbles.


The food and drinks are not the only reason why patrons keep coming back to Mamie Taylor’s, the restaurant’s fairly laid-back set up, comfortable (mostly communal) seating plan and funky interior are most certainly factors in brunch regulars returning as well.

Best described as a cross between a Western saloon and a Victorian drawing room, Mamie Taylor’s space is a playful and modern mix of exposed brick walls, warm brown timbers, vintage portraits and taxidermy.

With a chilled vibe, friendly and sincere staff, reasonable pricing, and a menu full of delicious brunch essentials and Southern favourites which hit all the right spots, Mamie Taylor’s weekend brunch is definitely worth a try.
