Uber taxi service might be returning to Vancouver

The popular app-based car service Uber could be plotting its return to Vancouver.

For a brief few months back in 2012, Uber was trying out doing business in Vancouver, but were soon run off the road by complaints from the incumbent taxi industry, and provincial requirements that Uber charge limousine rates–a whopping $75 per hour.

This summer, Uber tempted Vancovuerites yet again by running their “Ice Cream Day” promo in town, and now there’s the possibility the company might be poised to start up again here.

Local Facebook users are reporting seeing an Uber ad in their feed, which links to a signup portal for Vancouver drivers.

Uber Tweeted this week that they are “working hard to bring Uber back to Vancouver.”

Vancity Buzz reached out to Uber for more information, and will update as soon as we hear back.

UPDATE: Uber provided Vancity Buzz with the following comment:

We are not currently operational in Vancouver. With regard to our Canadian markets, Uber operates UberBLACK in Halifax, uberTAXI in Montreal, and a full suite of Uber services (UberBLACK, UberSUV, uberX and uberTAXI) in Toronto. We are always looking into the possibility of expanding services within existing markets and beyond.
