Uber to expand ride-hailing services across British Columbia next week

More than five years after Uber first launched its ride-hailing services in Metro Vancouver, the company is now set to expand across British Columbia — beyond its current service areas of Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Greater Victoria, and Kelowna.
The ride-hailing giant announced today that its ride-hailing services will have a province-wide geographical area, serving all municipalities, starting on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
“Uber’s rideshare has contributed significantly to our industry, giving British Columbians the option of a sober ride home after enjoying a meal or night out,” said Ian Tostenson, president and CEO of the B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association, in reaction to the ride-hailing company’s service area expansion announcement.
“Uber has also been a game-changer for those working late-night hours in the hospitality industry, helping them get home safely after their shifts. We are thrilled to hear Uber will be expanding across the province. The addition of Uber in smaller regions of BC will be a welcome addition to tourism, the BC wine industry, and an incredible convenience for families.”
In 2023, Uber received approval from B.C.’s Passenger Transportation Board (PTB) for a license transfer from another ride-hailing company to operate across the province, which Uber used to initially expand into Victoria and Kelowna. Late last year, Uber first signalled that this province-wide expansion would occur in 2025.
This B.C.-wide expansion means ride-hailing trips can soon be made from Vancouver to Whistler or from Nanaimo to Victoria, and upon disembarking on Vancouver Island from BC Ferries or Hullo Ferries, for example.
To ramp up its capacity to fulfill ride-hailing trips in communities across B.C., Uber is offering a $500 incentive for eligible drivers who complete their profile and complete at least 10 trips within the first four weeks.
