A new kind of party: UBC to host first yoga rave

Dec 20 2017, 3:57 am

In case you hadn’t noticed, yoga is a pretty big deal here in Vancouver.

From transparent pants to bunny-based bending, via the occasional unadvisable political stunt; you can’t go more than five minutes without stumbling across a new variation on one of the city’s favourite pastimes.

Now it’s time to say namaste to the latest yoga fad with the arrival of Vancouver’s first ever yoga rave. The brainchild of UBC Recreation, the event which is only open to UBC students, staff, and faculty; promises “glow sticks and glowing paint meet yoga mats and black lights.”

“When picturing yoga, most people think slow movements and static poses – which is not the intent of Kundalini yoga,” it says in a press release. “Kundalini practice is often called the ‘yoga of awareness’, and is basically one big dance party. By dance party we mean just that – yoga moves set to some of your favorite contemporary EDM songs spun by UBC’s staff DJ.”

Editor’s note: Due to a miscommunication a previous version of this article incorrectly stated the yoga rave was open to the public when it is in fact only for UBC students, staff and faculty.
