Vancouver Depression Run takes place at UBC this weekend

Dec 19 2017, 10:33 pm

When emptiness and despair have taken hold of your life and won’t go away, it can become hard to function and enjoy life like you once did. Join the Move for Mental Health to Defeat Depression with the UBC Vancouver Depression Run this Sunday.

One in five Canadians will experience a mental illness or issue each year and there are very few families who are not impacted by mental illness in Canada, yet the stigma associated with mental health continues. As physical activities can have a positive effect on mental well-being, UBC’s Mental Health Awareness Club is encouraging Vancouverites to join in the run and form teams to participate and fundraise in support of mental health services in Vancouver. Money raised will then be used to assist community organizations that provide direct support to individuals affected by mental illness and their families.

The run is one of many Defeat Depression campaigns held throughout various communities in Canada in conjunction with the Mood Disorders Society of Canada.

About Defeat Depression

Defeat Depression is a national mental health awareness, anti-stigma and fundraising campaign that provides hope, raises awareness and reduces stigma for people affected by depression and other mood disorders. Across Canada, volunteers are organizing walks, runs and other physical and social activities to get people talking about and moving for mental health. Physical activities like walking and running, along with community engagement and social interaction, have a demonstrated positive effect on mental health.

About Mood Disorders Society of Canada

Mood Disorders Society of Canada (MDSC) is a national health charity committed to ensuring the voices of people with mental illness, family members and caregivers are heard on issues relating to mental illness and mental health; particularly with regard to depression, bipolar disorder, and other associated mood disorders. Since 2001, MDSC strives to provide people with mood disorders a strong, cohesive voice to improve access to treatment, inform research, shape program development and government policy to improve the quality of life for people affected by mood disorders.
