"Leading the charge": BC university ranked one of the best in Canada and the world

The University of British Columbia continues to score among the best in the world in an annual set of university rankings, though it lags behind the University of Toronto for the top spot in Canada.
Global higher education experts QS Quacquarelli Symonds released the third edition of theĀ QS World University Rankings: Sustainability on December 10.

UBC scored as the world’s fifth most sustainable university, down one place from 2024.
The University of Toronto continues to dominate the list, claiming the first worldwide spot in sustainability. No other Canadian school made the top 10 for 2025.

“The QS World University Rankings, the most comprehensive ranking of its kind, shines a light on the best institutions from across the world, supporting our mission of enabling motivated people anywhere in the world to fulfil their potential through educational achievement, international mobility, and career development,” explained QS Quacquarelli Symonds online.
“Each of the QS rankings are compiled using a core methodology that employs a range of vital factors including student experience, university partnerships, research activity and faculty qualifications.”

QS World University Rankings: Sustainability
The ranking considered over 1,700 world universities from over 100 locations. The US led with 239 institutions on the chart, with New Zealand’s eight universities achieving the highest average score. Canada is the only country to have two institutions named to the top five.
