The 2015 Student Leadership Conference (SLC) took place this past weekend, drawing over 1200 students, faculty, staff and alumni to the UBC campus to ask “what’s your next step?”
For context, the SLC is now in its 13th year of bringing together inspiring speakers and interactive workshops. The student-led conference is one of the largest of its kind in Canada and is known amongst students as one of the landmark campus events of the year.
Talented local music group Class Act kicked off the conference inside the Chan Centre followed by an address by UBC’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Arvind Gupta. The opening keynote speech was given by Shaifali Puri, Executive Director of Global Innovation at NIKE Foundation. Through discussing her career path from journalist, to lawyer, to Senior Advisor to the President and COO of the Empire State Development Corporation, to Executive Director at Scientists Without Borders, and finally to Nike Foundation, Puri talked about stumbling toward your next step through “adjacent possibilities”.
Delegates then began their day filled with two featured presentations, two workshops, a lunch session, and a final closing keynote. Workshops touched on topics such as networking, the quarter-life crisis and leadership essentials and the closing keynote was given by renowned speaker Derreck Kayongo. Kayungo talked about his inspirational work with the The Global Soap Project and his journey from child refugee to NGO Director.
Vancity Buzz’s own Manny Bahia, Chief Business Development Officer, and Farhan Mohamed, Editor-in-Chief, led a featured presentation, giving students insight on the business, story of Vancity Buzz and how our newsroom is run.
Throughout the conference, delegates were asked to share their experiences on social media using #UBCSLC, causing Twitter and Instagram accounts to light up with photos of and tweets about the conference’s best moments.
