A student with the University of British Columbia has been confirmed as the person who died in an accident at a construction site next to the main bus loop last week.

Early Thursday morning, a body was discovered on the side of the future UBC Gage South Student Residence and bus layover facility being built at the new bus loop. At the time, it was not publicly known whether the victim was a worker or a student.

“It is with deep regret that I inform you, today, that this was a student from our UBC community,” said Louise Cowin, Vice-President of Students for UBC, in a campus-wide email.

“Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. Many of us may be confronted with a variety of emotions which might include shock, sadness and confusion. I know that those of you who have been affected will seek the support of family and friends.”

Counselling and support services are being offered to the UBC community.

The identity of the student has not been released.
