UBC sends incorrect admission emails to 215 prospective students

More than 200 prospective students who applied to programs at the University of British Columbia were told this month they got into specific programs when they hadn’t.

The university told Daily Hive that a processing error resulted in 215 applicants receiving emails that they’d gotten into a certain program on March 14.

Three days later, on March 17, the applicants received follow-up notes explaining the error.

UBC said all the students were admitted to UBC — but maybe not to their first-choice program.

Some students posted about the experience on social media, saying they thought they’d gotten into UBC’s Sauder School of Business or a science program, but learned they’d instead been admitted to the arts faculty. None of the students that Daily Hive contacted for comment wanted to speak on record, for fear of jeopardizing future admissions.

“While these offers represent a small fraction of the thousands of offers that UBC makes every year, we take full responsibility and are reviewing our admissions and communication processes to prevent this from happening again,” Sam Saini, associate registrar of student recruitment and undergraduate admissions, told Daily Hive.

The school added it’s working closely with the affected students to support them through the admissions process.
