Tumbler Ridge on edge after active shooter threat identified at high school

UPDATE AT 6 P.M. BC RCMP state at least 10 people have died, including the suspect. There is no longer an active danger to the community.

The small district municipality of Tumbler Ridge is on edge after an active shooter threat was identified at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.

According to information released by the RCMP, officers were on the scene as of 1:20 p.m. on Feb. 10.

An emergency alert was issued to residents in the area, warning folks to shelter in place and lock their doors.

In the emergency alert, the RCMP described the suspect as a female with brown hair. A later update from the RCMP added that the suspect had been located deceased.

“Work continues to determine whether a second suspect was involved and the total number of victims involved,” RCMP said, adding, “DO NOT APPROACH, CALL 911.”

In its most recent update, the RCMP said it has no information on the number of casualties or injuries.

The incident has prompted widespread reaction on social media.

On Reddit, someone claiming to live in the B.C. municipality said, “I live here currently, and the whole town is terrified. We have no idea what’s happening.”

Local politicians are also sharing their thoughts on the incident.

Tumbler Ridge is over a 13-hour drive away from Vancouver, northeast of Prince George, near the Alberta border. According to the 2021 Census, the small town had a population of just over 2,300 people.
