TransLink drops 'Wicked'-themed parody song to launch new Mark V SkyTrains

In true TransLink fashion, Metro Vancouver’s public transit authority is celebrating the launch of its newest SkyTrain model with pizzaz.
To mark the arrival of the Mark V, the next-generation SkyTrains now operating on the Expo Line, TransLink has released a parody of “What Is This Feeling?” from the hit musical turned movie, Wicked.
The video, posted to TransLink’s social media accounts on July 17, features all TransLink staff singing reimagined lyrics that highlight the train’s new features, from wider aisles to upgraded HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems.

The parody draws inspiration from the duet performed by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the Wicked film, but TransLink certainly isn’t loathing these new trains.

Of course, TransLink’s version didn’t skip a beat, as it also recreated that viral moment where Grande (who plays Glinda) dances in Shiz University’s courtyard with a book in hand.
But instead of spellcasting, the video spotlights sleek transit design, SkyTrain interiors, and a five-car open gangway, set to a show tune.

The first of 47 Mark V trains was officially unveiled to dignitaries, media, and eager public transit enthusiasts last week.
The five-car-long Mark V train will be able to hold 672 passengers regularly, both seated and standing. In comparison, the four-car Mark III train can currently hold 533 passengers.
Aside from the increased capacity, each Mark V train includes:
- Open gangway layout for easier movement between cars
- Wider aisles and more standing room
- Designated space for bikes, strollers, mobility aids, and luggage
- Improved HVAC systems
- LCD screens showing real-time stop and route information
- Indigenous artwork featured on each car’s windscreen
With the Broadway Subway extension and Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project on the horizon, the Mark V is expected to play a critical role in addressing growing demand.
TransLink estimates a 20 per cent increase in Expo Line ridership and a 50 per cent bump on the Millennium Line during peak hours over the next five years.
In recent years, TransLink has embraced playful campaigns, from a festive Reindeer Bus during the holidays to engaging TikToks and heartwarming seasonal videos, so a Broadway-style parody was a natural next step.
