TransLink buses resume regular service over Lions Gate Bridge

TransLink announced Friday morning that all buses from North Vancouver would resume their regular service over the Lions Gate Bridge after days of heavy delays and detours.

A thick metal plate over one of the bridge’s south-end joints has been causing significant traffic congestion all week as drivers slow down to almost a stop to avoid damaging their wheels or suspension.

While the bump definitely causes an unpleasant sound and feels quite harsh when driving over, the Ministry of Transportation said it is completely safe.

TransLink bus service on the 240, 241, 246 and 247 was diverted from the bridge all day Thursday and much of the day on Tuesday and Wednesday due to traffic causing delays of up to an hour on some routes.

Those needing to get between the North Shore and Downtown were required to take the SeaBus or one of the West Vancouver buses not affected by the detours.

The SeaBus was hence overrun with commuters, causing sailing waits and long lines. TransLink responded Thursday afternoon by adding an extra crossing.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Transportation said crews would be working to replace the design of the bump by Friday morning, however that has now been postponed until Saturday.
