While Rogers Centre erupted after George Springer’s home run for the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night, one fan was even more excited than the rest.
Michael Angeletti, who happened to be wearing a Springer jersey, was able to catch Springer’s home run ball. What made matters all the more impressive was that he was able to grab the ball despite not seeing Springer’s swing.
“I was actually, in that moment, fending off messages from my cousins who are nervous Blue Jays fans. I had to exit the cousin group chat,” Angeletti said in an interview with CBC. “As I was doing that, I only heard the ball come off the bat. Once everybody stood beside me, I knew it was coming to us, and I knew it was showtime.
“I put the glove on, put it right in the centre of the action. It actually bounced out of my glove, and I caught it with the off hand, unfortunately spilling some beer in the way. Nevertheless.”
While Angeletti has been able to compose himself since, it was very clear in real time just how excited he was to make the catch. You can certainly understand his emotions, as this was arguably the second-biggest home run in Blue Jays franchise history.
What made the moment all the better was that Angeletti revealed to CBC that it was his first time bringing a ball glove to the park. After such a big catch, you can’t help but wonder how many others look to bring their gloves to the World Series.
Thanks to that Springer home run, the Jays are indeed off to the World Series for the first time since 1993. They will play the reigning champions in the LA Dodgers, with Game 1 set to kick off at Rogers Centre on Friday night.
