For many players who end up playing for the Toronto Blue Jays, they often say that they’re playing for an entire country.
For Blue Jays prospect Arjun Nimmala, he might end up playing for three.
Nimmala, Toronto’s top pick in the 2023 draft, who is currently playing for the Single-A Vancouver Canadians, may make history as he is believed to be the first Indian American player to make it to the major league level. He is also the first player of Indian descent taken in the first round of the MLB Draft.
And his story was told this week on perhaps the biggest stage yet, as Nimmala was the subject of a recent NBC News feature for both broadcast and online purposes, with the print version written by
Now in his third minor league season at just 19 years of age, NBC’s crew was on site in Vancouver to tell Nimmala’s story.
This season with the Canadians, he’s put up a .234 average with a .741 OPS and 11 homers in 82 games. MLB.com currently has him ranked as the No. 46 best prospect in baseball, one of just two Blue Jays players on the list, with Trey Yesavage ranked at No. 53.
Nimmala says that he’s happy to be looked up to as a role model by those who might hear his story and be inspired to pick up baseball.
“I do get a lot of messages, especially on Instagram, from younger kids that are Indian that start to play baseball,” Nimmala told NBC. “They’re like, ‘Dude, I really look up to you.’ I think it’s super cool to see that.”
As for his own goals, Nimmala keeps his dreams big. While he might still be a few steps away from the major leagues, it’s something that remains at the front of his mind.
“I have 100 per cent confidence that I will play with the Toronto Blue Jays one day and make an impact.”
