Update: Apparently there are plans to have a 27 ft screen on Granville Street to watch the world cup final live. As I type talks are going on with the COV.

Commercial Drive, the capital of East Van and the centre of counter culture in Vancouver, is also one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in all of North America. The diversity of “The Drive” is what makes it perfect  for viewing the World Cup as nations compete for what many say is the greatest trophy in sport. If you want to watch the 2010 World Cup South Africa in Vancouver, then Commercial Drive is the only place to be in the Lower Mainland.

Top 5 Places to Watch the World Cup on Commercial Drive:

The list was very difficult to distinguish as all are great places to experience the World Cup. Overall, there are 26 places to catch the games on big screens. For sheer atmosphere nothing beats Commercial Drive. Any other part of the city should not make a top ten list.

1. Caffé Roma Sports Bar (1510 Commercial Drive)

2. Caffé Napoli (1670 Commercial Dr)
3. Caffé Amici (1344 Commercial Dr)

4. Portugese Club of Vancouver (1144 Commercial Drive)

5. Rio Theatre & Falconettie East Side Grill (tie)

Although cafes all across Vancouver will be open early to show games live, the atmosphere of Commercial Drive is difficult to replicate in  Downtown, Main Street or Kits.  Just look at this video from 2006 when Italy won the cup, people were celebrating on Commercial Drive well into the night. Think of it as celebration similar to Canada winning Olympic gold, on a smaller scale, naturally.
