Tom Brady chose St. Patrick’s Day to officially announce he won’t be returning to the Pats.

The six-time Super Bowl champion took to social media to thank the New England Patriots, his teammates, and fans, while noting that though undecided, his football career will go to a “new stage.”

“It has truly been the happiest two decades I could have envisioned in my life and I have nothing but love and gratitude for my life in New England,” says the 42-year-old in a statement on Twitter. “I cherished every opportunity I had to be part of our team, and I love you all for that.”

While it’s just a formality, the final two years of Brady’s contract officially voided on Tuesday, making him an unrestricted free agent. Brady played his entire 20-year career with the Patriots.

The start of NFL free agency is set for Wednesday at 4 pm.
