Despite having all of their star players healthy for the first time this season, the Vancouver Canucks delivered one of their most pitiful performances on Tuesday night.
The team was outclassed from start to finish in a 6-1 drubbing at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets. Kyle Connor scored a natural hat-trick in the first period, and the game was never even close.
The effort was far from good enough for the Canucks, who are currently outside of the playoffs. They trail the Calgary Flames by one point for the second Wild Card spot.
“Three major blunders, right? I didn’t actually mind our first but the three mistakes in our net. That’s a good hockey club over there, and then obviously everybody on our team had a tough night,” said head coach Rick Tocchet.
This was the last game in the Canucks road trip. They finished with a 1-2-2 record, securing just four of 10 potential points up for grabs. They had some epic highs, including a 3-0 shutout win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, as well as some terrible lows like tonight.
“It’s hard to be consistent. It’s hard to do the right things all the time. It’s hard. It’s hard to go through people, it’s hard to surf properly, it’s hard to reload properly… You can’t do it once in a while if you want to be a good time. That’s what it is.”
“It’s my job. I’ve got to get some guys committed. It’s on me.”
With each additional loss, the pressure to make a move increases for general manager Patrik Allvin. The club is not ruling anything out as both Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller remain on the table in trade discussions, although the team’s preference is reportedly to deal Miller.
The Canucks play two divisional rivals, the Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers, over the next few days. Those games will provide good measuring sticks for how worried this management group should be.
