Tocchet apologizes to Canucks fans after another brutal home loss

Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet had a message for the fans after another blow out loss at Rogers Arena.

“I apologize to the fans,” he started. “We’re not playing good enough at home. It’s on me.”

The Canucks lost 5-2 to the New York Islanders tonight and failed to make the game interesting. They had just five shots through the first 40 minutes.

“Patrick [Roy] out-coached me,” explained Tocchet.

The loss drops their record on home-ice to 2-3-3. Those three regulation losses have all been embarrassing blowouts including tonight’s game, a 6-0 shutout loss against the New Jersey Devils, and a 7-3 defeat against the Edmonton Oilers.

“It’s a frustrating situation because the fans are [paying] $200, $300, $400 and we’re throwing out duds,” continued the head coach.

“I apologize to the fans again. We’ve got to correct this.”

Despite the putrid home record, the Canucks are actually off to a strong start this season. They’ve been great on the road with a 6-1-0 record and that has helped them maintain a solid spot in the standings.

“I don’t know, I have no idea. That’s the answer,” said Tocchet when asked why his team has struggled so much at Rogers Arena.

“We’ve got to change pre-game skates, we’ve got to do something different.”

The home-away splits for the team thus far are shocking. The Canucks look like a completely different team when away from Rogers Arena.

“[We’re] not playing too well the last couple of games,” said captain Quinn Hughes. “[We need to] try not to focus on home or away, just look at every game as a new night and try to play our best.”

“Obviously we didn’t do that tonight.”

The Canucks have three more games at home before going on the road for the rest of the month. They’ll be hoping to earn some better results than they have in Vancouver so far this season.
