Vancouver, it’s Müller time.

Officially.

After intense speculation from around the globe for more than a week, Thomas Müller has signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The 35-year-old German soccer legend announced the news himself on social media, holding up a #13 Whitecaps jersey.

“Whitecaps, let’s make history,” Müller said in a video produced by the club.

“I’m looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship,” Müller said in a media release. “I’ve heard great things about the city, but first and foremost, I’m coming to win. I’ve had great conversations with Axel Schuster and Jesper Sørensen, and now I can’t wait to play in front of the supporters and to see all of the fans come out to BC Place as we head towards the playoffs.”

Müller will land in Vancouver next week, on Aug. 13. His first press conference and training session with his new club is set for Aug. 14.

Müller has confirmed that he’ll make his Whitecaps debut at BC Place on Aug. 17.

In a German language interview, Müller said he spoke to a lot of people about Vancouver before signing with the Whitecaps, including Bayern teammate Alphonso Davies.

“The first question is ‘How is the weather?’ That should be very good. You have a beach, mountains… You can see how modern the city is,” Müller said.

“The overall package, in Vancouver with the Whitecaps, was simply special. I think the city belongs to the most beautiful cities in the world… For me, it’s an adventure. I’m also looking forward to the country, I’m looking forward to Canada, to the people. I’m really happy with the decision.”

While the city and lifestyle is important to Müller, he was clear that the most important thing is winning. The Whitecaps are currently enjoying the most successful season since joining MLS in 2011, and currently sit second in the Western Conference standings.

“The most important thing for me, even if I consciously take a step out of Europe, it’s important for me that when I play, it’s about sporting success. That’s what I’ve always strived for,” Müller added.

Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster called the addition of Müller a “statement signing.”

“Thomas is a world-class player – the ultimate Raumdeuter ‘Interpreter of space’ – known for his elite chance creation, unmatched spatial awareness, and relentless off-the-ball movement,” said Schuster.

“He not only brings a winning pedigree and exceptional football intelligence, but also a tireless work ethic that will elevate the entire team. Thomas is a natural leader whose passion for the game is infectious. This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership – a transformative moment for our club and our city. We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver.”

Müller comes to Vancouver after 17 years starring for Bayern Munich. He has signed for the remainder of the 2025 season, plus a Designated Player option for 2026.

Müller’s contract is reportedly worth US$685,000 for the remainder of the 2025 season, before his salary shoots up to US$7.5 million in 2026.

The Whitecaps also had to pay a $400,000 fee to FC Cincinnati, the MLS club that first owned Müller’s discovery rights.

Müller is by far the most high-profile signing in Whitecaps history. He scored 250 goals in 756 appearances with Bayern Munich, helping the legendary German club win a record 33 titles:

  • 13 Bundesliga championships
  • Eight DFL-Supercup titles
  • Six DFB-Pokal (German Cup) titles
  • Two UEFA Champions League titles
  • Two UEFA Super Cups
  • Two FIFA Club World Cups

Internationally, Müller has earned 131 caps for the German national team, scoring 45 goals. Notably, he was his country’s top goal scorer when Germany won the FIFA World Cup in 2014. He was also the tournament’s top goal scorer at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
