5 things to do in Vancouver today: Thursday, August 13

Autumn is creeping closer and closer, every day. It’s time to cram in as much summer fun as you possibly can before the leaves change, and the world enters its yearly death spiral. Tell the Fall to “shove it”, with a few of the awesome things to do in Vancouver today.

Kindlers Society Benefit Concert

  • What: A concert featuring Salmon Arm, B.C. native and famed Canadian performer Dominique Fricot, along with youth performers from across Metro Vancouver. The Kindlers Society was founded by a Vancouver middle school student, and helps provide communities around the world with the resources they need to kindle thought and education.
  • Where: Roundhouse Community Centre – Performance Hall, 181 Roundhouse Mews, Vancouver
  • When: Thursday, August 13; 12 to 3 p.m.

Bears in Hazenmore at Seven Dining Lounge

  • What: Bears In Hazenmore is an ambient alt-rock group from Regina, Saskatchewan. Since forming in 2014, they’ve become known for ambient soundscapes and the ability to draw audiences in with lyrics and musical builds. If you understood even half of that, this is probably the show for you.
  • Where: Seven Dining Lounge – 53 West Broadway Street, Vancouver
  • When: Thursday, August 13; 8 to 11 p.m.

Comedy Night at the Rickshaw with Dave Merheje

  • What: Come down to Vancouver’s Rickshaw Theatre for some of the best names in Canadian stand-up comedy. Canadian Comedy Award winner Dave Merheje is joined by recent expat Simon King, Chris Gordon, and it just has to be good. It just has to be.
  • Where: The Rickshaw Theatre – 254 East Hastings Street, Vancouver
  • When: Thursday, August 13; 8:30 p.m.

Vancouver Queer Film Festival

  • What: Tonight marks the beginning of the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. From August 13 until August 18, some of the biggest and newest names in the LGBTQ2+ film community will be displaying their works for critics and film goers alike.

Jean Paul Lajois’ “Fake Indians”

  • What: Inspired by an artists’ love of Westerns, this exhibit takes a hyper-colourful look at the trend of white actors portraying First Nations characters in film. Drawing on imagery of the Wild West, neo-expressionism, and Sunday morning cartoons, Jean Paul Lajois explores his own feelings of disconnect from his Metis Heritage.
